Power, Temptation and Destruction: Chronicle Movie Review

Chronicle have been getting all the hype ever since the first trailers are released and I've been very curious how the movie will be like when it is finally released in the public. My primary concern about the film based on the trailers is that the concept is not really new. It has been done before so many times on movies, television and comic books. But when I finally got the chance to see the film last Tuesday night, I'm surprised that it is much better than I expect it to be.

The film tells the story of three teenagers, Andrew Detmer (Dane DeHaan), Matt Garetty (Alex Russell) and Steve Montgomery (Michael B. Jordan) who acquired super powers after being exposed to a strange object. Like a new toy, the three starts enjoying their new found abilities by messing around with people, playing pranks and committing small scale mischief. But things get out of hand when emotions starts to take over. Can these group resist the urge of the dark side or will they give in to the instinct of rage and destruction?

I appreciate how the film is done in the most simplistic approach and with less sugar coating. The elements of science fiction is definitely there but was never emphasized with the use of advance gadgetry or complicated scientific lingo. The film's major strength is the script and the emotional significance of the concept. The movie allows us to witness and feel raw but strong emotions that connect directly to the audience. Since the connection and feelings are real, audience finds it much easier to empathise with the characters and allows us to go deeper on each character's personality.

Of course everything is not possible without the excellent performance of the cast specially Dane DeHaan, who portrays the character of the emotionally disturbed and repressed Andrew Detmer. His powerful and believable performance serves as the movie's core that eventually becomes the main catalyst of energy and sensation for the entire film. Alex Russell and Michael B. Jordan on the other hand are also not disappointing for they both did pretty well portraying their respective roles as the protective cousin, Matt and the free-spirited jock, Steve.

But the movie is not just an emotional roller coaster ride. After the gradual build up to the climax, Chronicle surprises everyone with an intense and exciting bout that even previous high profile superhero movies fail to execute. The scene is short and quick but highly satisfying, quenching my thirst for an action packed finale.

Props to the production for a very brave and outstanding attempt to create a film on an era where superhero genre is dominated by high budgeted and high profile properties in the industry. This movie proved that a movie doesn't need complicated story or an array of big names to be great but only talent, dedication, heart and guts. Created and Directed by Josh Trank and written by Max Landis, Chronicle is now showing in all cinemas nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

The Faith Dilemma: Next Fall Review

Do you believe on something that don't believe in you? How can a gay man be a believer if in return the very words he put his belief in dislikes them. This is the dilemma discussed on Repertory Philippines' first offering of the year, Next Fall.

A masterpiece written by Geoffrey Nauffts, Next Fall tells the story of the five year roller coaster love affair of two gay men, Luke (David Bianco) and Adam (Bart Guingona) in the busy streets of New York City. It is a very wonderful relationship and an almost perfect one if not of Luke's religious conviction and Adam's Atheistic intimidation that leads to constant arguments about Faith and God. The two tries to cope with each other's belief at least to avoid any dispute but everything turns upside down when a tragedy happened that suddenly changes everybody's life.

At first you will see Next Fall as a typical play that discusses Homosexual relationship. The show is witty and not to mention smart. But it is actually more than that. The show may have questioned the unending issue of morality and faith but in the end the show didn't answer anything at all. Instead the show brings up more questions than answers that eventually make people start thinking.

Like the characters on the show, Adam and Luke have their own beliefs. Both character are strong believers that is why they always end up arguing about them. So what did they do to stop the argument? They stopped thinking about it and continue their lives enjoying each other's company. That is how we all live our lives, we stop thinking about our faith to be able to cope with the society that believes on different faiths. But despite the intentional ignorance over these beliefs, the show thought us that we will still come to the point that we will all have to make the choice. Whether it is right or wrong, moral or immoral, it is a choice we need to make when the time comes.

I don't really need to go in the details about the performers because they are all brilliant. Two thumbs up for both the leads (Guingona and Bianco) and supporting casts who naturally portrays life as it is giving us the chance to experience real emotions. Next Fall is definitely a must watch for people who wants to think and question life.

A Day on a Life of a Smuggler: Contraband Movie Review

Ever since, I'm always curious about how smugglers hide items so that they can able to enter territories without being inspected by customs or the police. Our local movies specially those action movies back in the 80's and 90's has great share of characters smuggling guns or drugs to the country and they do always show some techniques how to do it. But I guess those are the old times.

Chris Farraday (Wahlberg) long ago abandoned his life of crime, but after his brother-in-law, Andy (Caleb Landry Jones), botches a drug deal for his ruthless boss, Tim Briggs (Giovanni Ribisi), Chris is forced back into doing what he does bestrunning contrabandto settle Andys debt. Chris is a legendary smuggler and quickly assembles a crew with the help of his best friend, Sebastian (Ben Foster), to head to Panama and return with millions in counterfeit bills.

Things quickly fall apart and with only hours to reach the cash, Chris must use his rusty skills to successfully navigate a treacherous criminal network of brutal drug lords, cops and hit men before his wife, Kate (Kate Beckinsale), and sons become their target.

Of course US feds and customs has a more intensive intelligence with regards these smugglers so I assume that they must have learned all the tricks available. With this movie, it showed how smugglers become more creative on hiding things not to mention disguising so they can live among regular people. These smugglers are different to those we already know. They are subcontractors hired to smuggle goods that did not necessarily belongs to them. It is a very refreshing concept and quite intriguing too.

All the actors did a very good job portraying their respective roles. Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale already proved themselves quite sometime in the past with good movies they've done so I already expected it from them. This time Ben Foster shines the most and delivers a very impressive performance among them all. The last time I saw him is on a very small role in X-Men Last Stand where he played the winged mutant Angel / Warren Worthington III. Now he did showed that he has the potential to be character actor that producers should watch out for.

If you are curious to know what goes on a daily life of a smuggler then watch Contraband. Maybe you can learn a thing or two about smuggling though at least not on a bigger or unlawful scale. Mind Games, Melancholia and the Fall: Sherlock Series 2 Finale Review

Currently drying my tears after watching Sherlock's Series 2 Finale. I never expected this show to be so emotional. It definitely hits something here in my chest.

This episode is so far the best among the six episodes. I can literally feel the gradual buildup of intensity as truth unfolds and allegiance are revealed. It is also very refreshing to see a completely different Sherlock. I never imagined how will somebody like him can become so normal like most of us. A person so vulnerable and extremely shaken by stress, fear and frustration. In other words, this is the first time I saw Sherlock as a real person, a real human that feels pain. This is the first time that I can actually relate to Sherlock himself instead of just treating him as a numb and emotionless organic super computer.

Last season, I believe that The Blind Banker episode is the most boring episode of the series (at least for me). I strongly believe that without that episode, you can still understand the series. However the episode's writer, Steve Thompson redeems himself by coming up with this brilliant season finale that eventually serves as a huge turning point for the franchise. With this episode, Sherlock proves that a series don't need 20+ episodes to create such brilliant concept that will leave people emotionally attached.

If you haven't seen this series, do yourself a favor and watch it. I promise, you will never regret it.

A New Start for a Franchise: Ghost Protocol Movie Review

Six years after Ethan Hunt's (Tom Cruise) wife death, he is rescued on a prison in Moscow by an IMF team lead by Jane Carter (Paula Patton) and now promoted field agent Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg). Now instructed to retrieve information about a certain person of interest only known as "Cobalt", plans turned upside down when the Kremlin exploded and the IMF is totally implicated in the incident. US president is now forced to activate "Ghost Protocol", a black operation disavowing the agency on any connection to United States. Now with no backup, no plans, no contact and no choice, Ethan's new team including a new team member IMF Analyst William Brandt (Jeremy Rener) will use everything that they got to clear IMF's tainted name.

Mission: Impossible films were never been my cup of tea. Spy movies don't really impress me a lot maybe because of too much gadgetry that for me spoils most of the action and analytic thinking that I look for a procedural type film. That is why I prefer watching adventure and detective thriller films over espionage themed films. I did see M:I2 before and it is quite ok for me. But it never ignited an interest to follow the subsequent sequel (M:I3) and the first (M:I). But I should say that Ghost Protocol did a very good job simulating my senses and bringing me to a realization that I should see the whole franchise (except the TV series, I won't go that far).

Though Ghost Protocol lacks the robust treatment exhibited on the previous installments, the film managed to give us a beautifully crafted cinematography and creative executions that provides us with brand new experience that will leave everyone hungry for more. Commissioning the genius behind Disney's Iron Giant and Pixar's The Incredibles and Ratatouile is absolutely a good move. Brad Bird's ideas definitely works in harmony with the production's own creative vision marking his first live action directorial job an absolute success. I also believe that the early plans of reboot is somehow still present because Ghost Protocol though obviously still a sequel, revitalizes the franchise giving it a fresh start for the new generation without completely disregarding the first three films. The story is straight forward and simple, sprinkled with adrenaline rush which is a complete treat to moviegoers.

Regarding the cast, I'm so sad to find out Ving Rames is reduced to a cameo appearance. I really like his intimidating but at the same time very quiet demeanor. I've been wanting to see him kick some real ass in the film but I guess I have to hope that he will return on the next film and do a lot of clobbering time. Jeremy Rener's appearance in this film makes him an absolute match for Tom Cruise' character. Well I just found out that he is indeed being groomed to be the replacement of Ethan Hunt just in case Tom Cruise decides to step down from the franchise or at least becomes a minor recurring character like be promoted to higher position in IMF. Brandt is Hunt's first male teammate that impresses me so much. He is too good that he overshadows Paula Patton that for me delivered the weakest performance. Simon Pegg is a good replacement for Ving Rhames since they do almost the same function which is being in charge of the computer and gadgetry operations but unlike Rames, Pegg is effective as the film's comic relief and at the same time also contributed to the action by being hands on in combat. Villains on the other hand is too flat and their ideology of "survival of the fittest" is not new making them really less interesting. Plus it didn't help that the actors they got are not that famous (atleast for majority of moviegoers) so the character recall is extremely weak.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol is now showing in the Philippine cinemas from Paramount Pictures distributed by United International Pictures through Solar Entertainment. If you have budget, watch it on IMAX. Promise, you'll never regret it.

There is More Than One: Arthur Christmas Movie Review

As if we all need another Santa Clause movie. To be honest, I'm one of those who are not excited to see another one. Well because of the obvious reason that I've seen every single one specially those with Tim Allen. Not that they are bad, but I just got used to it and the magic had already disappeared. And maybe I'm just one of those kids who just outgrown Santa and found out that he is not really real. So after that I totally lost all interest over Santa Claus movies. But not until I saw Arthur Christmas.

New Santa, new gadgets, new ways of delivering gifts, these are just one of the things you will be enjoying to witness. Does the modernization kills the spirit, well sort of but that is actually one of the movie's stirring point and it helps to build up the conflicts between the characters. And the revelation about Santa Clause is quite interesting. And of course the movie will not be complete without the joy and warmth of Christmas Holiday brought not only to kids but also to those young at hearts.

If you are tired of Santa Clause movie I'm telling you that you should give Arthur Christmas a chance. Well at least let your kids see them of course with you and discover the greatest secret Santa Clause is hiding from every one. Arthur Christmas opens tomorrow, December 7 in all cinemas nationwide distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.

30 Minutes or Less Movie Review

Hey guys! Just got back online after three days of down time. I guess having no internet is like taking half of my life literally. Good thing my connection is reinstated a few hours ago and here I am wide awake again in front of my laptop surfing like I've never seen the internet for a year. But let's cut the crap out and go straight to the real business. Our movie for the day: Columbia Pictures' 30 Minutes or Less.

The film is all about a Pizza Delivery Boy called Nick (Jesse Eisenberg) who's life revolves around his boring and underpaid job. But his life went upside down when one day he end up being hostaged by two unknown men. To make it more exciting, Nick is strapped with a jacket loaded with C4 bombs enough to blow him to kingdom come. Forced to rob a bank, he seeks the aid of his best friend (Aziz Ansari). After that is just a plain roller coaster ride as the two went on a wild chase dealing with the police, a hired assassin, fierce prostitutes, douche teenagers, horrible bosses and a hundred thousand dollars. Can Nick made it to the end of the line before the bomb explodes?

30 Minutes or Less is a fun watch. Watching the actors playing their respective roles is such a treat. As Nick, Jesse Eisenberg is stripped from his usual geeky stereotype and now given the chance to play a blue collar worker with a personality bordering to mediocre to boring. It is rare to see him playing such character and I'm glad to see him getting out of that comfort zone. Aziz Ansari definitely shines on the film as he played Nick's best friend Chet. As a sidekick, Chet's character has his own strength and Aziz executed it very well. Being a forerunner on the Indian sidekick genre (e.g. Kal Penn), I should say that he is very promising and has a lot of potential. The tandem of Danny McBride and Nick Swardson somehow lacks chemistry but works pretty well on screen. It perfectly portrays how two opposite people without any much in common (except stupidity) can become best friends. Danny McBride playing a role of a over aged, rich, brat annoys me a lot and I like it. Nick Swardson on the other hand lands flat on the ground without even giving me a single laugh. I guess Swardson is more fit on playing gay/flamboyant roles on Adam Sandler films.

As a whole, the movie satisfies my primary cravings for Fun, Laughs and Good times. Though that line may sound like a rip-off from a Bob Fosse musical, 30 Minutes or Less is indeed an enjoyable film. It is a heist movie with a little touch of The Hangover. Maybe a little bit male version of Sugar and Spice without the pregnant Betty Doll costumes. In short, the movie has all the good ingredients for a perfect comedy flick. But despite having the right mix of elements, the film end up having unnecessary details left loosely hanging up leading to a disastrous ending that in my opinion is irritatingly otiose and senseless. But as a consolation, I may say that I appreciate what they did with the laser pointer. A good prop build up and very clever one.

If you just want to have fun with friends and family (adults only), 30 Minutes or Less is definitely a good watch. But if you are the one who values story telling and details, the film is absolutely not delivered well. Experiencing a Masterpiece, Experiencing The Sound of Music

It was a refreshing experience last night for that is my first time to see The Sound of Music on stage. My closest experience on it is only through my DVDs. Though the musical is not one of my favorites, many will agree that it is one of the best musical ever made in history. From the geniuses behind Oklahoma!, Carousel and Cinderella, I'm glad that The Sound of Music once again graced the Philippine theater scene through Resorts World Manila.

For the sake of those who still don't know the plot of the show, Basically The Sound of Music is a story about Maria Rainer (Ampil/Villonco), a young postulant who's appointed to be a governess of the 7 children of Captain Georg von Trapp (Gemora/Joven/Feist). Through Music, Maria won the hearts of the seven but unfortunately she also ignited something inside the Captain's cold and stern heart. Faced with an unexpected temptation, she left the house and went back to the Abbey to seek more guidance. With the help of Mother Abbess (Marquez/Francisco), Maria finally saw the light and accepted her true calling.

To some who already know the story may find it less interested about it but the music alone is immortal and will definitely captivate you no matter how many times you listen to it. Richard Rogers and Oscar Harmmerstein II's compositions are magnificent. Completely timeless and very indulging. As performed by the 2011 Manila cast, I'm honored to see and hear such great array of talents performing on this excellent show. Watching Audie Gemora (Sweeney Todd), Joanna Ampil (West Side Story), Marvin Ong (Sweeney Todd), Miguel Faustman (Shakespeare in Hollywood) and the rest of the cast on that stage is one of the best honor I will ever have.

Mio and a Scale Model Design of the Von Trapp Manor Interior

One of the best thing this staging brought to the audience is to show a magnificent set designed by the one and only Mio Infante. Like what most of us expected, Mio created highly detailed designs that breath life to The Sound of Music's scenery and architectures. He literally transformed NPAT's big stage to dazzling sets that are absolutely Broadway worthy. Add to that is Paul Soriano's breathtaking animated backdrops projected on NPAT's massive LED screen giving the audience a unique theater execution combining cinematic and live theater experience on stage.

But having a gorgeous set design paired with a big stage and animated backdrop has its disadvantage too. Yes it is true that the production design is excellent beyond expectations but it is too good that it almost stole the spotlight. I suggest that the performers should work extra hard to own the big stage and maximize the use of space. Also the gap on every scenes are too long. The set change is too slow in my standard. In some shows it works good but with The Sound of Music, it kills the momentum. I understand that there are a lot of set pieces needed to be placed on the stage but it is not enough reason to stall the show. I hope it can be improved. And lastly, not really an expert on stage equipment but last night the sound system doesn't sound very good. I feel that the actors are struggling to sing with a poor sound quality.

Though the show suffers some technical issues, I may say that I'm happy with what I saw last night. It is a dream come true to see this legendary musical that I only saw on the comfort of my home on a TV screen. A must watch for everyone specially to this generation who never saw this one of a kind masterpiece before. Thank you to Resort World Manila for giving the Filipino people such an opportunity to see The Sound of Music on the top class Newport Performing Arts Theater on a very very very (yes I'm saying that 3 times) affordable price. I want to hug you guys now.

Heart of Steel: Real Steel Movie Review

Can you imagine in a distant future when men got bored of watching a human giving a beat down to another human? Where flesh are replaced by mechanical brutes pushing violent sports to the limits. This is 2020. The year when Robot Boxing becomes extremely popular among junkies and capitalists. Welcome to the Real Steel.

Ok let's face it, the story template is unoriginal. So what? Even Harry Potter's story template is not so original together with most great movies in the past. But they are getting the raves. For me it doesn't really matter where an idea comes from. What matters most is where you will take it. With what Real Steel showed us, the film gives a bigger opportunity to create a vast universe for itself thus giving it a possible richer sequel. They don't even need to stop on boxing. There are a lot of sports out there and I'm sure people are more willing to see robots playing Basketball, Volleyball or even synchronized swimming. Real Steel has a brighter future and seeing that makes the film excellent on its own way.

Reel Steal also fascinates me with it's good set of lead characters. I'm so relieved that Max is not just your ordinary kid on a movie. Usually, kids are added on the film just to say that it is kid oriented. Dakota serves his purpose in marketing but he achieved more than that by playing a very complex boy. Much like John Connor of the early Terminator movies. He is not your average kid. He is smart, outspoken, determined and not to mention a good dancer. Though at times he becomes very annoying, Dakota definitely won my heart.

Charlie Kenton (Jackman) is a complete opposite of Max. He is not just a greedy douche but also a big idiot who just fights for money. Obviously a character you won't love. But under the ugly character of Charlie is a scarred fighter who's hunted by his past failures and regrets. Good thing they gave the role to Jackman because the character's background as a failed boxer is not explicitly emphasized not until on the later part of the film. Audience may grow hating the character of Charlie specially that Max's character is shining all the way. But with Hugh on board as Charlie, audience may give the character a chance to develop and not judge it for what it explicitly show on screen. In the end you will still love him.

Designing the world of Real Steel is definitely not a very easy job. Year 2020 is just a decade away from us and what the world will look like in 10 years definitely matters on this film. It could be just easy if they just throw a lot of fancy futuristic designs there but they decided to think it over. The design is a good combination of futuristic and contemporary. The design team had created a high tech world but at the same time they preserved what looks primitive. Technology can be progressive in a couple of years but architectural designs may look the same. This makes the designs more realistic and natural.

And bottom line, the movie got a heart. It is an underdog story that many people can relate to. I guess that is what really matters. Definitely a perfect family flick for everyone. I'm also looking forward for the sequel. Maybe this time with mix martial arts sports. That would be cool.

Trip Down Memory Lane: POC's Ang Bagong Harana

When did you last listen to original Filipino compositions? Do you still remember? If not, probably you are one of those who enjoys listening to foreign tunes that is dominating the music charts of this generation. Let's admit it, most of us already forgot to look back and acknowledge the arts that help shape our nation's artistic sensibility. Thank God there are still people who value our Heritage and one of them is Philippine Opera Company who produces their latest show, Ang Bagong Harana.

I was so thrilled months ago when they announced this show and for somebody like me who's playlist are mostly local songs, I can say I'm strongly excited to see and listen to these long forgotten melodies. POC didn't fail me as expected. The repertoire is well prepared with carefully selected songs that perfectly pictures our society through time.

Songs dated as early as the time of our ancestors with unknown composers opens the show with ancient lullabies, tribal chants and folk hymns. Then comes the early classics with pieces created by the likes of Joey Ayala and Levi Celerio. If the first part is a complete education for most of us (because they are practically behind our generation), the second half on the other hand features the contemporary music era that we already enjoyed during our childhood as composed by Ryan Cayabyab, George Canseco, Francisco Santiago and Freddy Aguilar.

Though you may think that Ang Bagong Harana is a very simple show, it is something more than that if you experience it. Directed by Floy Quintos and as performed by the company's most celebrated singers and actors like Karla Gutierrez, Aizel Prietos, Charley Magalit, Janine Santos, Marian Santiago, Lawrence Jatayna, Jack Salud, Nazer Salcedo, Marvin Gayramon, Al Gatmaitan, Jurgen Unterberg and Floyd Tena, I assure you that you will get more than what you are asking for.

Ang Bagong Harana is literally a time machine on stage and I'm so happy that I became part of this small but monumental event of taking pride of being a Filipino. Melancholia: Depressingly Brilliant

Currently sad now. Blame it to Lars Von Trier's latest movie Melancholia. When the first press release about this movie came out in the public which is I guess during the Cannes Film Festival, a sudden twinkle of interest sparked on my mind. When they said that the movie is about a rogue planet colliding to Earth, it is enough reason to see it. But people getting morbidly depressed because of the phenomena, it gets more interesting.

Finally I got the chance to see it earlier. I'm amazed how original it is. Though I saw a lot of science fiction drama before, Melancholia is absolutely different. It talks about people's capacity to be depressive and how they affect all the people around them. It is a study of human psyche under great tension and stress. The whole apocalyptic scenario is just a big back draft but surprisingly both blended well to each other. The roller-coaster ride of emotions specially on Act 1 can really get in to your nerves and suddenly you will not notice it that just like the characters on the movie, you are already feeling depressive. Good thing? Yes, absolutely. I believe it serves its purpose of showing how depression can be far more contagious than a deadly disease.

The actors are great. Specially the lead Kirsten Dunst who played the character of Justine. After Spider-man 3, I lost faith on her but I'm happy that at last the old Kirsten is back. I can't hardly see the remnants of her being Mary Jane Watson but now all I can see is her brilliant works on the past like Little Women and Mona Lisa Smile.

I applaud Lars Von Trier for giving us a very unique ride on this film and it somehow opens my mind on how depression works. I highly recommend this film to everyone but if you are the one who hates watching depressing movies, might as well skip this for the moment or try watching it with somebody. It sometimes help when you have somebody to hold your hands.

The Deadly Innocence of Hanna

How different is Hanna (Saoirse Ronan) to any other girl we know? Well, other than being raised on a jungle far enough from the civilization, she is a girl trained for extreme human survival groomed for an specific mission given by his own father (Eric Bana). She is definitely an ultimate fighting machine in one package.

Though it seems that this movie is marketed like a younger version of Evelyn Salt or a standalone movie for Hit-Girl, Hanna is definitely not Salt or Kick-Ass. Compared to its predecessors, Hanna is more organic and realistic in contrast to a glossy and special effects driven scenes from previous action and comic book blockbusters. The fight scenes don't look as fluid as most action movies are that makes the scenes more natural, spontaneous and unrehearsed. This is how real people fight. This is how real people kill.

I also like the use of Grimm's Fairytale as a device for the whole movie. It somehow shows a mix of Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Snow White and some little touch of Hansel and Gretel. The emphasize on Hanna as the heroine and Marissa Weigler as the wicked witch or Big bad wolf is very strong and surreal. It adds a unique texture to the plot despite being a hybrid from different movies and stories we've seen or heard before.

I'm quite happy with the actors' performance and for the obvious reasons, Soirse Ronan and Cate Blanchett are hands down brilliant. I'm a bit annoyed with Sophie (Jessica Barden) but hey that is how most skanky teenagers act right? So she perfectly nailed it.

Hanna could be not the action movie that most audience will like to see but I definitely approve that this is a movie worth checking out. Coming exclusively on Ayala Cinemas (Glorietta 4, Greenbelt 3 and Trinoma) this coming September 28, Hanna is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.

Friends with Benefits: Inspiring Friends to Play Tennis

Just saw Friends with Benefits last night (at last) and it is a blast. Now It keeps me wondering why Columbia Pictures took that long to bring it here in the Philippines when it actually have everything that a blockbuster movie have.

From the director of “Easy A,” the film stars Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis as liberal singles Dylan and Jamie, respectively, who think it will be easy to add sex to their friendship, but they discover that getting physical always leads to complications.

First it is a movie with Justine Timberlake and Mila Kunis who is definitely the hottest actors a male and female market will sure hit. Then it is a movie about Love and Sex. Who doesn't want a movie about Love and SEX!!! Ohh... I see. Maybe that it is. I forgot. We are still on a country ruled by the righteous. Oh well. But seriously, despite the fact the Friends with Benefits is almost like any movie that talks about two consenting adults having sex just for fun, the movie is still entertaining and heart warming.

So summing it up Friends with Benefits is a cool movie that will definitely inspire you to play Tennis all day long. Remember, sports is good for your health.

When Truth Becomes Lies: Floy Quintos' Fake

I never heard about this show not until it ended when it first run a few months ago in UP Diliman. I guess my theater radar is still not that good. Friends and colleges starts raving about it and I feel so bad that I missed it. Good thing that UP Playwright's Theater decided to have a rerun this month for this much talked about show and I got lucky to catch it.

About the show: Acclaimed as “One of Quintos’ most effective plays…”, Fake delves into the final days in the life of Jose Marco (Joel Lamangan, Leo Rialp), a man who successfully foisted his forgeries of the Code of Kalantiao and La Loba Negra until the fake works were debunked by renowned historian, Henry Scott (Paul Holme). Fake scrutinizes our need as a people to cling and believe in something bigger than ourselves, something even bigger perhaps than truth.

Like what everybody said, the show is indeed powerful and thought provoking. Ok it is given that the actors did a very good job on their respective roles and who am I to doubt such names like Shamaine Buencamino, Gerald Napoles, Leo Rialp, Paul Holme, Ces Quesada and I didn't even saw Sir Joel Lamangan's performance but I'm sure that he did a marvelous performance but what really hits me hard with this show is the subject matter. It opens a lot of questions to myself. Now it makes me wonder how many on our historical heritage are real or fraud. What if everything that we know is a lie. It is a scary thought but this show, this play written by Floy Quintos and Directed by Tony Mabesa just opened my mind to possibilities that may shatter our nation's legacy just in the name of Faith or belief on something that is bigger than anything including the Truth.

Absolutely this is a show worth seeing because it promises top of the line performances from a wide array of talented actors and a substantial material that will definitely feed your mind. Now if you really want to see it, you should not waste time because it is just a limited run that will end on Sunday August 21, 2011 at the Teatro Hermogenes Ylagan, Rizal Hall, UP Diliman. Do you still remember Noli Me Tangere? This novel is not a stranger for those who belong to my generation. I still remember how we read and discuss this everyday back in High school. It was one of my favorite subject back then. Years pass, times change. As the Philippines go through radical changes through technology, literary sensibilities also change. In an era where Harry Potter and Twilight dominates youth's readings, classics like Noli Me Tangere is already forgotten. But I guess these novels are indeed immortal because no matter how times fly, they will still look for ways to come back.

In celebration of 150th birthday of Jose Rizal and Tanghalang Pilipino's Silver Theater season comes one of the most celebrated musical ever created in our country. From the libretto of National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera, Music by Maestro Ryan Cayabyab and original costume design by the National Artist for Theater Design Salvador Bernal, Noli Me Tangere the Musical is back to immortalize once again the iconic novel of out National hero.

Bringing Noli's characters to life are stage veterans such as Cris VIllonco (A Little Night Music, Joy Luck Club) as the beautiful Maria Clara Delos Santos, Bodjie Pascua (Hamlet, Magic Flute) as the Greedy Padre Damaso, Al Gatmaitan (Master Class, Rent) as the lustful Padre Salvi and Gian Magdangal (Rent, The Wedding Singer) as the novel's hero Crisostomo Ibarra. Introducing on this production, on his Philippine theater debut is Mark Bautista a former ABS CBN talent who's now under GMA as a regular Party Pilipinas performer is alternating with Gian in the role of Ibarra.

I already saw the show twice with both Gian and Mark as Ibarra. The show is magnificent. Bien Lumbera's words and Cayabyab's music is perfect for each other and creates a triumphant musical experience for the audience. I saw a lot of Noli and Fili plays before but this is my first time to see the musical and I instantly fell in love with it. The actors didn't disappoint me at all for everyone from leads to the smallest roles gave all their best to give us quality entertainment. Lastly, I have to commend Mark Bautista who is a newbie in the industry. I'm totally impressed with his take on Crisostomo Ibarra and gave it a different attack compared to what his alternate did.

If Gian preserves Ibarra's European Elegance, Mark executes his character with a more light-hearted Ibarra that looks much more playful and young. For me it is a gamble because it looks more freestyle than scripted and for a theater newbie, that is a big risk and Mark handled it like a pro. His technique works well and becomes a very big strength on his performance giving emphasize to his sudden transformation from a cheerful guy full of Love to a guy full of anger and loss. Though Mark Bautista's talent is ignored in mainstream showbiz, I highly recommend that he continue doing theater because acting on stage is definitely his calling.

Directed by Audie Gemora (Sweeney Todd, A Christmas Carol), Noli Me Tangere the Musical opened last August 5 and will run until August 28 in Tanghalang Aurellio Tolentino of Cultural Center of the Philippines. Be Ready to be Surprised: Sweet Charity

It is really rare that I'll see something that will surprise me, something that I don't expect, something that will leave me speechless and stunned. I was never been so surprised that until now, I still can't believe what I experienced last Thursday night.

I saw 9 Works Theatrical's latest show, Sweet Charity. Mind you the show is spectacularly sexy, breathtaking, invigorating and fabulous. The iconic "Big Spender" production number excites me a lot and definitely the best number on the entire show.

Just like what I'm expecting the company consisting of both new and seasoned performers delivered a magnificent performance including the title role played by Nikki Gil who's enthusiasm and energy resonates on her dialogues, songs and dance moves. I'm so happy to see her very much improved since her last theater debut as Elle Woods in Atlantis Productions' Legally Blonde. Now she is perkier and more alive than ever. I enjoyed every minute of her performance specially the number she performed in Vittorio Vidal's appartment (If My Friends Could See Me Now). Nikki totally embodies Charity's playful nature that makes her fun to watch.

Other than Nikki, another cast member deserves his rightful recognition for giving a phenomenal and surprising performance as one of the lead characters. I admit, I'm one of those who are doubtful of Kris Lawrence's acting skills. Though I already saw and experienced watching theater newbies from the past (like Gian, Ciara and Sheree), I treat Kris differently because I never saw him doing any acting job (Music Videos not counted). But when I saw Kris' first scene in Sweet Charity, he instantly caught my attention as well as the rest of the audience because he is flawless, spontaneous and hysterically funny. Somehow I feel so bad because I judged him too soon but at the same time I'm glad he proved it that he can show it straight to my face that I'm wrong. Kudos to you, Kris.

Of course the whole show is nothing without the whole cast which is comprised by some of my favorite dance gurus like Francis Matheu, Anthony Ong, Job Bautista and Chinie Nepomuceno. New faces (for me) like Carmell Ross and Angela Padilla also left good impressions while theater bigwigs like Miguel Faustman and Caisa Borromeo stands out amidst minor roles. The trio of Shiela Valderama Martinez, Ciara Sotto and Sheree Bautista perfectly blends as they play Charity's closest friends Nickie, Helene and Carmen respectively and plays a big part for the show's comic relief.

I never saw the original movie and my only peg for this show are the videos I saw on youtube (which is mostly Big Spender) and Chicago (another Bob Fosse musical). I really like Chicago so my expectations towards the show is generally high. But it appears that Sweet Charity is completely different. Yes they both utilize Fosse style of dances but the overall show has a different flavor and approach. My only problem with Sweet Charity is the sad ending.

Summing it up, Sweet Charity lives up with most of my expectations. Great choreography, amazing set, phenomenal acting equals great show. If you are the one who's looking for fun, laughs and good times, Sweet Charity will definitely be more happy to provide it to you.

Tales Written on Clothes: Love, Loss and What I Wore

I've been an avid fan of theater performances in Manila for almost 4 years and I never experienced watching this kind of show that I saw 2 days ago. After the successful 3rd run of Defending the Caveman, CTE productions is back for another unconventional production different from any shows I watched before.

About the show: The sensational Off-Broadway show, Love, Loss, and What I Wore, written by sisters Nora Ephron (When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle) and Delia Ephron (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Hanging Up), vividly recounts a selection of comic and heartwarming stories from various women who remember key moments in their lives through the clothes they wore. The show is based on the bestselling book by Ilene Beckerman, and has featured notable actresses such as Jane Lynch (Glee), Rosie O’Donnell, Brooke Shields (Blue Lagoon, Grease), Betty White (Golden Girls), Rita Wilson, Nikki Blonsky (Hairspray), Fran Drescher (The Nanny), Jamie Lynn Siegler (The Sopranos and Entourage), Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls), Alicia Silverstone (Clueless), America Ferrera (Ugly Betty), Kathy Najimy (Sister Act movie series), Kristin Chenoweth (Wicked), to name just a few.

Since its debut in 2009 at New York’s Westside Theater, Love, Loss and What I Wore has never failed to garner praise from critics and delight audience members who saw themselves or someone they knew in each funny and poignant tale. The show won the 2010 Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience as well as the 2010 Broadway.com Audience Award for Favorite New Off-Broadway Play. It has since then been staged in Los Angeles, Toronto, Brazil, Germany, Australia, and Paris.

The material is basically a collection of monologues about different female experiences ranging from their first dress, to first dates, first romantic encounters and first heartaches. Definitely the show is a treasure trove for girls but in some ways male audience may find the show a bit boring. Personally I didn't understand some parts because I definitely don't talk Prada. But I can also say that despite being designed for female audience, men can actually find a female experience he can relate in to specially about clothes and relationships.

I mentioned that Love, Loss and What I Wore is different from other shows because the show is performed by the actors while reading the book and sitting on a chair as if they are just doing a story telling session. I'll admit it that I'm a bit culture shocked and I didn't expect a show like that.

With those hand gestures, you will know what Menchu is talking about on this segment.

At first it looks like performing for this production is a simple and easy task for the actors but I realize it is not as easy as it looks like since it requires mastery of their craft to act and read at the same time. And I'm sure it is not a big problem for actors like Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo (Next to Normal), Jay Valencia Glorioso (A Little Night Music) and Cathy Azanza-Dy (Spelling Bee). With these trio's resumes, I'm confident to say that this performers will not disappoint you with their first-rate acting prowess.

Teresa Herrera in one word = Goddess

Joining Menchu, Jay and Cathy are Bituin Escalante (Dreamgirls) and Teresa Herrera (Dogeaters) who both are just having a come back on local theater. This is the first time I saw them perform live and they are magnificent beyond words. I'm looking forward to see more of them on other shows in future productions.

I would highly recommend this show for girls because they are the one who will definitely enjoy watching this piece. To the guys, the show may not be that enjoyable to most of us but basically you don't really have a choice since your girlfriend or wife will insist that you drive and accompany her to the theater, and yes she got a ticket for you. So don't waste the chance, sit with her and watch the performance of these lovely artists and maybe you will be surprised that you can learn something from it that you won't expect.

When Legends End, Legacies are Born: Deathly Hallows Part 2 Movie Review

I don't really know how to start this review, In fact I believe this movie doesn't really need one. It is not because I'm still emotional about the ending but I'm more worried that the words I will put here are not enough to give justice to this magnificent piece of work. The movie deserves more than that.

Fierce duels, unexpected heroics, dramatic scenery, incredibly meticulous production design and not to mention a splendid performance from the actors are just some of the many reasons I can give you why I think this movie surpasses my expectations and perfectly compliments the film's gripping finale. Saying that the movie is excellent or brilliant or majestic in any ways possible is definitely an extreme understatement. The movie hit me harder than a powerful killing curse. The sensation from the very beginning of the film up to the last scene in King's cross left me motionless and exhausted as the breathtaking events of the wizarding war comes to an inevitable end.

I'm not a fan of the books. Though now I'm trying to read the "Deathly Hallows", I still don't consider myself as s "Potter" expert. But regardless if you are a Harry Potter fan or not, in all standards Deathly Hallows Part 2 is undoubtedly the best among all the movie adaptation and no one can change the fact that other than being a brilliant literary piece, it is now a cinematic legacy this generation will remember for a life time.

Experiencing Second Childhood: Varekai

Weeks ago, I was fortunate to be invited to see Cirque Du Soleil's Manila presentation, Varekai. Despite that I already saw a similar presentation on a certain stage production, I'm still excited to see Varekai because this could be my 2nd time to see an authentic circus show since my childhood. Varekai didn't fail me.

Loosely based on a Greek mythology about Icarus (Mark Halasi), who falls to the ground, breaking his legs as he does. He is suddenly in a strange, new world full of creatures he has never seen before. Parachuted into the shadows of an enchanted forest, a kaleidoscopic world populated by fantasy creatures, this young man sets off on an adventure both absurd and extraordinary. On this day at the edge of time, in this place of all possibilities, begins an inspired incantation to life rediscovered. Assisted by the strange and quirky Skywatcher (Gordon White), he works on regaining his strength and finding his way to fly again. While on the ground, he meets La Promise (Yulia Mykhailova) -The Betrothed, an underground insect-like creature who he falls in love with. The two have barely met when she is kidnapped. Having already lost his love, Icarus must also find a way to see her again and conquer the obstacles in his path, continuing his quest through the world of Varekai.

The show indeed takes me back to my childhood. Just like what I've said earlier, there are other productions that features acrobatic shows but Varekai is far more superior compared to these small shows. Like Icarus, Cirque Du Soleil managed to transport their audience from our world to a world fill of imagination in just a snap of the finger. The colorful costumes and creative designs transformed this make believe fantasy into a production that can tickle the inner child from anyone.

Here are some of my favorite acts from the show:

Flight of Icarus where performer Mark Halasi executes an elegant and gracious contortion and acrobatic act on mid air with the use of straps and net.

Water Meteors. Though it seems this is a very easy act, what makes this special is that it is performed by three kids. And they are awesome. Water Meteors is an acrobatic act where performers twirl ropes with metal cups attached to the ends, simultaneously performing virtuosic acrobatic feats. It was a very enjoyable act and watching this 3 young performers fascinates us on how people on this business starts on a very young age.

Areal Straps. Like the Flight of Icarus, this is a breathtaking act on air using elastic straps performing acrobatics. But unlike the first, this time 2 acrobats performs stunts on air simultaneously. This act is a good display of union between beauty, symmetry and strength. Indeed a very stunning performance to remember.

Russian Swings. The show is concluded with a riveting stunt where performers are propelled from 2 giant swings. Acrobats are hurled high into the air, alighting on their partners' wrists or on a landing canvas, sometimes even flying from one moving swing to the other. A gracious ending that makes audience crave for more.

Varekai is a wonderful night of enchantment and acrobatics. Experiencing it in Manila is a big privilege and absolutely a very memorable one. Everyone who wants to revisit their childhood must take the chance to see Varekai. Catch the final shows until it ends on July 8, at the Grand Chapiteau Quirino Grand Stand, Manila. Strictly for Fans: The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber

A week ago, I was lucky to experience The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. To be honest the feeling is quite the same like the first time I saw CATS last year. I was expecting that this show will really blow my mind. So does the show really delivers what people are craving over this show? Well it is kinda a little bit of both.

Let's start with the positives. First you will enter the theater and you will see a very simple set wit fancy shaped backdrops. This is supposed to be projection screens where some clips will be shown during the show. At first you can't really imagine how good it will look like and when the show started, it is such a stunning work of art. The show started with an overture from CATS' "Jellicle Ball" which is I think a very good jumpstart to set the mood of the show: triumphant and alive.

Technically speaking, the show is indeed first class. Everything is presented in style and the performers did gave us the performance we all craved for. But despite all the glitter and spectacles, the Show fails on something that did cause some major draw backs.

Based on the title alone we know that this is an anthology of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical genius. And when we say music, that is only the thing you will ever have on the show. Well there are I guess 2 commentary videos that will be played during the show but other than that, the performers will just perform all song numbers without actually verbally communicating with the audience. Well this kind of of format will only work to "hardcore" Andrew Lloyd Webber fans, for they don't really need introductions for every set of songs. On this show, the screens on the backdrop is the only means of audience to know what musical does the current song comes from. But what if the audience missed it. They are now left guessing and thinking about the song instead of them just sitting there and enjoying the show. The souvenir program could be really helpful but for people like me who have limited budget that night, most audience didn't have the privilege to get a hold of that programme to guide them on the repertoire. This leads to some audience getting bored during songs that they don't know. I for instance only saw Phantom of the Opera and CATS and I just know some other songs because they are quite popular not only on the world of theater but also on global pop culture.

In short, instead of being something that will educate people about Andrew Lloyd Webber Music, I guess the show is not quite effective on that part.

To sum it up, The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber is an extravaganza all Andrew Lloyd Webber fans should never miss. For those who have limited knowledge about Andrew Lloyd Webber, might as well think twice before deciding to see this show. Consider the things that I mentioned above before you buy your tickets. Transformers Dark of the Moon: Best Movie in the Franchise

When Transformers first premiered in June 28, 2007, I was one of those fans excited to see it for the first time. I'm too excited to see it that I left work at lunch and went straight to the theater to watch it. Yes certainly that's not an ideal Employee of the month attitude but the bottom line here is people are really pumped out to see this classic coming at last to the silver screen as a life action movie flick.

Just like as expected, the movie is a hit on the box office. Though the movie is not the type of movie that will win an Oscar, Transformers is considered as one of the most well received movie of that year. Then fast forward to June 24, 2009, Revenge of the Fallen came. To everybody's surprise the movie received mixed to negative feed backs. Personally, I enjoyed watching that sequel but I noticed that the movie's plot is weak and misguided. It also have an annoying sense of humor that is completely inappropriate to a movie that is being sold to younger audiences.

Then this year, June 29th. Michael Bay is back with (probably) the last movie on the franchise. With the bad reputation of Revenge of the Fallen, people are less excited to see this sequel. I browse blogs and sites everyday and people seldom talk or blog about them. This is scary but Transformers Dark of the Moon is already doomed even before it is released on the cinemas worldwide.

But Michael Bay did know how to surprise people. Transformers Dark of the Moon is a complete departure to the failure of Revenge of the Fallen. Not only that this installment is more action packed, this sequel has a more solid plot to stand in to. Also among the three movies on the franchise, Dark of the Moon is the most human for giving real emotions on this cybernetic alien machines of planet Cybertron that can connect to the audience.

I never ever expected that I will cry on a Transformers movie. But when you see the film, you will know why a big man like me can shed a tear for this kind of movie.

Congratulations Michael Bay for saving the franchise, you really caught me off guard with this one. Thanks to Steven Spielberg for trusting and keeping Bay to do this final film on the franchise. This movie rocks my world last night.

P.S. I was really expecting Rosie running on a dilapidated Chicago only on her Victoria's secret lingerie but I guess that opening sequence is enough to boost the temperature of the movie. To those who criticize her acting skills: seriously, since when people got so critical with hot leading lady's acting abilities. As long as she can deliver lines that is okay with me. In fact she is more than okay for a first timer, so be gentle on her.

Transformer Dark of the Moon opens today, June 29 on all cinemas worldwide. Get your tickets now and run to the nearest theater. Expect long lines because this is one heck of an experience that I'm sure many will want t osee. A Royal Triumph: The King's Speech Movie Review

It is really rare for me to review a movie like The King’s Speech. To be honest, I never imagined myself wasting time writing about this subject matter. I never like watching this kind of movies that are based on Historical events because I find them boring and stiff. But when I saw The King’s Speech, I’m surprised that I actually enjoyed watching it.

Though it seems that this is your average historical film about British royalties, the film is somehow different because it focuses primarily on the King's struggle to overcome a speech disorder that he has been suffering since childhood. From that plot alone the movie successfully grabbed your attention. It may look like a small detail but still it is a detail that caught every one's attention. I really admire writers who can focus on a very small fragment of detail of one's life and expand it to create a sensible story that many people will be more than interested to see or hear.

Since they established the center of interest, the movie now removes the stigma most people feel when watching historical biopics where they feel very intimidated that they need to be academic to understand or appreciate the source material. With this film, they make the movie enjoyable even if you are not a history buff. Movie goers can focus and enjoy the movie's plot without worrying of missing names and dates thus enabling them to relax and appreciate this work of art.

This movie definitely deserves your time. You guys know me. I rarely recommend art films but with The King's Speech, I'm ready to make an exception. Directed by Tom Hooper, with a brilliant cast including Collin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, Geoffrey Rush, Michael Gambon, Guy Pierce and a lot more. The King's Speech is now showing exclusively on Ayala Malls (Glorietta 4, Greenbelt 3 and Trinoma) starting last Wednesday, May 11.

And He Conquers Midgard: Thor Movie Review

It has been days since I saw Thor (twice) and the excitement is still not wearing out. I'm always skeptic over superhero movies and most of the time I don't really expect too much so that I will not be disappointed. But Thor is definitely an instant hit beyond I ever imagined surpassing my wildest expectations.

Seeing Thor for the first time is like watching Iron Man when it first premiered years ago. It is absolutely a dream come true. A long waited movie that most fans never imagined will ever be on the silver screen. Many fans are even against it because of the numerous disasters of comic book to Hollywood adaptations these past few years. But Marvel and Director Kenneth Branagh proved them wrong when Thor came out and it is not the film everyone is expecting to come.

The Good

Straight forward and Focused. One of the most critical element of a superhero movie specially if it is the first one is the origin. In fact most critics based their reviews mostly on how movies interpret the hero's roots. Some films succeeded on this part with flying colors but in order of bringing an accurate origin compromises films overall running time. With Thor, they managed to show Thor/Asgard's origin without wasting a lot of film and appropriating those running time to what the movie really needs to show -- ACTION.

Mythology at its finest. Thor is a comic book hero but other than that, he and the entire realm of Yggdrasil are actually based on a existing Mythology from Norway. So that extends Thor's audience from comic book aficionados to Fantasy and Mythology freaks. The film did a good job on giving the Realm of Norse mythology a new face making it a little cosmic for the modern world.

Fan Service. Do I need to say more? The movie didn't hesitate showing things what fans want to see on a Thor Movie. From the lines, attitude, action scenes and even action poses. Thor delivers an ultimate fan service that fans will definitely die to see.

The Bad

The movie is almost perfect not until the Warriors three ruined it. In fairness to them, they are good actors. But they are suppose to be bad ass celestial beings. They are one of the top warriors of Asgard but they end up becoming a bunch of wuss. They don't even look like the character at all.

Yes they nailed Fandral's (Joshua Dallas) look perfectly but Hogun (Tadanoobu Asano) and Volstagg (Ray Stevenson) is a complete fail. Ok, I can forgive Hogun for not having those Mongolian sinister mustache and beard but what I can't forgive is what they've done to Volstagg. Volstagg is suppose to be one of the most adorable character in Asgard. His big frame gave a lot of contribution to his endearing personality. So why did the production hired a ripped Ray Stevenson to play a massive and round Asgardian? It is so wrong! They should have stick with the classic Volstagg look and hired plus sized actors to play him.

Well other than that the movie is completely perfect. I'm not really surprised when the movie garnered a total of $39M in box office and that is before it even hits US cinemas. Also more than cash returns are concerned, Thor also did good on critics when the film receives a 95% approval rating on the review aggregator website and a 6.8/10 approval average from Rotten Tomatoes (55 reviews).

So does Thor deserves your hard earned cash? The answer is definitely a big YES! Catch Thor on both 3D (IMAX and Digital) and 2D theaters nationwide and witness the movie that opens summer with a big bang. Worlds Collide: Shakespeare in Hollywood Review

Tomorrow until weekend is your very last chance to see Repertory Philippines' latest show "Shakespeare in Hollywood". Just like Rep's previous show, "Shakespeare in Hollywood" aims to reintroduce a Shakespearean tale by incorporating the material to a more modern world. Quite a good idea and adding comedy over it makes it very effective. But does it delivers?

In terms of acting "Shakespeare in Hollywood" is no doubt far more brilliant than you can ever imagine. They got the best and finest talents joining the cast like Joy Virata, Miguel Faustman, Caisa Borromeo and Red Concepcion to name a few. Then they also have a very talented director on board with Jaime Del Mundo who I believe is very dedicated on giving the audience the entertainment we deserve.

I also like how the set and light design is executed. I want to commend Lex Marcos (Set) and John Batalla (Lights) for a job well done. I remember asking the cast if the set will be big since the show is set in Hollywood. They said I should not expect for that since this is during the old times where movies are shot only on sound stages. But I was surprised when I saw the set for the first time and it looks exactly what I'm imagining it would be.

My only problem about the show is I think people who don't know Shakespeare's "Mid Summer Nights Dream" will have difficulties on relating to the show. I for instance haven't seen or read it even once and I got easily lost on most of the punchlines. Another factor is I don't know who the characters are except the 4 Warner Brothers. They are decades far from our generations and obviously I can't make a connection to them. Unlike "The 39 Steps", "Shakespeare in Hollywood" might require everyone to at least know the basics of "Midsummer Nights Dream" to fully appreciate and absorb the material.

Totally Underrated: Sucker Punch Movie Review

Saw Sucker Punch last week on an advance screening but decided not to divulge my critic right away for some reasons. First of all, prepare to be surprised. Sucker Punch is not your ordinary femme fatale movie. Despite all the mind bending claims of Warner Bros., I stay safe by lowering my expectations. And yes, I'm caught off guard.

The movie is an ultimate Zack Snyder resume. It utilizes all of his techniques that make him big in the past years on films such as 300 and Watchmen. His signature slow motion sequences, high detailed macro shots and surreal environment makes the visual treatment of Sucker Punch beyond what I'm expecting from Snyder. Then add to the good visuals is a magnificent and invigorating music tracks that amplifies the emotions of its respective sequences specially the scenes without speaking lines.

Acting wise, the ensemble of cast didn't really need Oscar worthy acting performance. But I want to commend Emily Browning and the rest of girls for bringing the swagger in the house and proving that they are the new bloods that will inherit the crowns of the likes of Angelina Jolie, Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu, Drew Barrymore and Uma Thirman. The fight scenes are never dull and I know this could sound very inappropriate but as a compliment, I just wanna say that they really turned me on... so much.

Now, what about the story? The problem with Sucker Punch, its visuals and fight scenes are too good that some didn't even care to bother giving the plot a chance to grow in them. Probably it is also Snyder's fault but this only proves the fact that most people are still drawn by visual theatricality than substantial plots. Just like what I mentioned earlier, I'm completely unprepared. Zack Snyder managed to create a bad ass movie and at the same time creating something that will really bend our minds. I didn't expect Zack Snyder to be this daring to the extent that he almost challenged the quality of Chris Nolan's Inception. If Inception doesn't exist, Sucker Punch could be the movie that we are all talking about.

To be honest. After watching it for the first time, I left the cinema confused and completely mindfucked. I really didn't get it. It is the reason why I didn't released my review after watching it on that advanced screening. I said to myself, I would be unfair if I judge the movie just based on one seating. I want to be sure if the story really have sense. Initially my review for Sucker Punch is "it is a Movie on Drugs" because I really thought that this film is completely senseless.

But I trust my instinct and gave the movie a second chance. Watching it for the second time and of course with the help of some online references, the movie makes a lot good sense now. Those who thinks that the movie is a trash. Just admit it, you didn't understand the film at all. Watch it again and maybe you'll find out that it is a lot smarter than you think. Another tip, watch out for some subtle foreshadowing used in the film and listen to the soundtrack, some of the answers are there.

So to end this review, Sucker Punch is the biggest underrated movie of the year. Give it a chance and watch it at least twice.
